O Key of David and sceptre of the House of Israel, you open and no one can shut; you shut and no one can open: come and lead the prisoners from the prison house, those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. Today’s reading is Isaiah 9:1-3, 6-7 I wonder: are there times when I feel like I am stuck in the dark? When it feels dark in my heart, or in the world around me? Can I talk to God about that feeling? Can I be honest: do I sometimes get used to the dark inside of me? Does it sometimes feel like I will always be angry, or sad, or lost? This is the good news: God does not wait for us to find our way back, or to turn on the lights ourselves. God comes to us in our darkness, because God loves us -- not because we love God. Can I let that good news soak into my heart right now? This passage from Isaiah tells us that God’s good kingdom is coming to us because of his great love. I wonder: can I see that great love in the face of the child Jesus, as we wait to celebrate his birth this Advent? I wonder: what dark places in my heart need God’s light to shine? What dark places in my world need God’s goodness and healing love? Can I believe that God wants to make all of these things new?
