In 2013, Patrisse Cullors coined the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter when she used it to comment on her friend Alicia Garza's Facebook post in response to George Zimmerman's acquittal of the killing of Trayvon Martin. In the months and years that followed, well-meaning white Americans reacted to the hashtag with #AllLivesMatter, a saga Dr. Andre Johnson wrote about in "The Struggle over Black Lives Matter and All Lives Matter" with co-author Amanda Nell Edgar.
