Heart of a Volunteer: Veterans Podcast

Society & Culture

Co-Hosting today's Saga episode is Army Veteran, Mike Humphreys. Mike is no stranger to podcast visits and media, so the chat was real light. Living in Portland, OR, Mike spends a lot of time outdoors and when he isn't he is an English online tutor to Chinese students, so we got into the coronavirus of course, business is booming right now. When he was 8-years old he was cast as "Young Forrest Gump" in the movie Forrest Gump, to one up that, he joined the Army as an Infantryman and served in 1st Armored Division and deployed to Anbar Province, Iraq. Mike has a deep tradition of military service in his family, so it made since for him to be interested in the Army.  This was the first time that Mike has openly talked about his personal feelings about serving and how it has effected him, most hosts just want to hear about Gump he said, but he opened up about how he feels and how it has effected him. He left the thought and idea of his service behind and went 11 years before reaching out to Veteran friends, he discovered that they were going through the same things he was, but had 10 years to deal with it. Mike is working through his understanding of his own mental health, but he has a great ability to express himself and how he feels. He graduated from college a year ago and went to the VA and sought counseling, opened up the years of service and is on the climb back up. Since everyone has seen "Forrest Gump", he is planning on using that as a platform to spread Mental Health Awareness. Check out Mike's video when he talks about his experience with PTSD and its effects, very good example of talking through it. Expect to hear from Mike here again on the podcast and be on the lookout for him in upcoming movies, he's making some moves. Everyone stay safe out there and stay blessed. HOV©2020
