A kind husband, a father of eleven children, and at the same time a strict ascetic, Louis’ conduct as king was that of a real saint. St. Louis' letter of advice to his eldest son, the later Philip III, reflects not only his saintly piety, but also his high ideal of kingship, and illustrates how a saint might act on the throne of France.
