When Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil came out in 2006, he became the first openly gay Royal in Indian History.

Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil is the 39th direct descendant of India's Gohil Rajput dynasty. Gohil publicly came out in an interview to a local newspaper in 2006, becoming the first openly gay royal in the country. He was 41 at the time.

The Maharaja and Maharani of Rajpipla publicly disowned him and soon subjected him to conversion therapy. "They thought it was impossible that I could be gay because my cultural upbringing had been so rich. They had no idea that there's no connection between someone's sexuality and their upbringing," Says the prince.

The gay prince endured years of torturous conversion therapy.

Today, he is fighting to make conversion therapy illegal, and works to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

In 2018, Gohil opened his palace, Hanumanteshwar, as the first-of-its-kind LGBTQA Community Center.
