Oscar Grant III was returning home on New Year's Eve in 2009 when he was shot dead by Officer Mehserle on the BART Fruitvale Station platform. This was one of the first times since the televised Rodney King beating (1991) that police brutality was filmed by witnesses. Oscar's death sparked protests, riots, and questioned police brutality. Oscar's death was portrayed by Michael B. Jordan in the 2013 movie "Fruitvale Station" written and directed by Ryan Coogler.
