Countries that don't grow much barley are signing up to watch Australia's case against China at the World Trade Organisation. Australia has taken China to the World Trade Organisation over its decision last year to place tariffs of 80 per cent on Australian barley. Jeffery Wilson, a research director of the Perth US Asia Institute, says a number of countries are pulling up a chair to watch it all unfold. Yesterday's announcement by the WA government follows the Victorian Government's announcement in July that it has plans to end the harvesting of native forests by 2030. This has the Australian Forest Products Association worried other states will follow suit. After growing in plantations for almost twenty years, the harvest of native Australian sandalwood has begun in the wheatbelt.
