Western Australia Country Hour

News & Politics

The severe frost events earlier this month have wiped $250 million worth of value off the state's estimated grain crop. That's a total of 700, 000 tonnes damaged by frost. The latest Grain Industry Association of WA crop report has the WA harvest sitting at just over 19 million tonnes. But that estimate could be ambitious considering the frost forecast for tomorrow morning and the lack of spring rain. Drought and above average temperatures, continue to reduce the size of Canada's canola crop. WA based grain trader James Foulsham wasn't surprised by this week's announcement of a reduced Canadian crop. He says it will confirm to the market there will be a shortage of oilseeds for some time.
