When first learning the Language of Visual Arts, it is normal to become overwhelmed by concerns of whether we are doing it correctly. The terms may seem confusing and difficult to comprehend. In this podcast we discuss the challenges that come with identifying the Elements of Art and integrating them into an analysis of the Principles of Design. Through practice, we come to better “see” a work of art or design in new and more dynamic ways. We expand our scope to include why style and subject matter are important, the significance of historical and cultural context, and how art functions in society. While the process of writing about art can be daunting, we are rewarded with a deeper understanding of art, the artists who create it, and the arc of time within which they are made.
