GHOST was a smash-hit 1990 supernatural romantic thriller that created an iconic and often parodied pottery scene which holds up surprisingly well. The story sees Patrick Swayze&apos;s Sam Wheat, an investment banker, struggling to articulate his feelings to his very much adored girlfriend artist Molly (Demi Moore). When Sam is murdered in a mugging gone wrong his spirit stays behind to help protect and warn Molly that this act of violence was not as random as it first seems. Bruce Joel Rubin&apos;s excellent screenplay provides the emotional backbone to an entertaining, well told story with a cast of good-looking and talented actors, a classic combination. The special effects remain mostly fairly effective and Vincent Schiavelli almost steals the movie in two scenes as the terrifying ghost of a suicidal subway victim. Not the sandwich shop in case you were wondering. If you thought AIRPLANE! Director Jerry Zucker was the obvious choice to tell the tale you&apos;re a genius because the writer cried when he found out.

I&apos;m sorry to have to disappoint you but the idea that snowflakes are unique is not entirely true, there being eight main types of shapes at the molecular level, with 39 sub-categories which then order themselves via weak hydrogen bonds to each other, resulting in the symmetrical hexagonal shape of the snowflake. At the atomic level they are indistinguishable, being comprised of the same oxygen and hydrogen atoms and in that sense of course we&apos;re all interchangeable and alike but a part of the same: the snow, me, you, the phone you&apos;re listening to this on, because all atoms of any element are identical. Not close or similar, but exactly identical. Is that profound? I don&apos;t know but it&apos;s worth bearing in mind while you listen to me and my snowmies discussing the Top 5 Snow scenes or movies.Dan has been talking about the documentary 14 PEAKS: NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE for a few weeks now and with his visit to Nepal on the horizon we thought we&apos;d take the time to review this celebration of extraordinary and almost unimaginable courage, strength and determination. Nepalese climber Nims Purja and his team scale all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in 6 months and 6 days, a task for which the superlatives barely do justice. These are truly incredible people, doing incredible things for incredible reasons and there&apos;s some food for thought in Nims&apos; pleas for greater recognition and acknowledgement of his accomplishments in light of the relative glorification of western mountain-climbers, when their achievements are rooted in the hard work of their Sherpa support teams. Unmissable.We unanimously agreed THAT GIRL LAY LAY is the best kids thing we&apos;ve ever reviewed on the pod. The Netflix series sees an A.I. avatar from a personal affirmation app materialise in the real world to help boost the self-esteem of 14 year old Sadie, a sentence I only just about understand and a concept which made me feel so old I soiled myself in solidarity with my geriatric brethren. Helpfully that chimes with the theme of the episode "Boombox Burger Bop" in which Sadie&apos;s parents struggle for relevance when performing their 10 year old burger jingle. At one point Lay Lay says "hashtag don&apos;t sleep on crypto" and I wanted to kill myself. But rapper Lay Lay (real name Alaya High) really does have some flow.That&apos;s all for now simpletons. 14 Peaks & That Girl Lay Lay

Director Frank Marshall (ARACHNAPHOBIA) brings us the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. The Fairchild FH-227D was carrying a rugby team and various related friends and family when it crashed into the Andes mountains in October 1972. A compelling true survival story with impressive location photography and awe inspiring scenery, time has been cruel on this as it all too often has the feel of a soap opera despite the decent acting talent involved which includes Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton and Illeana Douglas.It&apos;s also comforting to know that despite my fear of plane crashes, being suddenly thrust into a survival situation I&apos;m hopelessly ill-equipped for and the notion of freezing or staving to death, all I&apos;d need to do to survive an air disaster is smoke a lot of cigarettes and eat my friends ass. Sounds good.  

Midweek Mention... Alive

There have been some great movies and scenes set in hotels; I&apos;m thinking of course of the likes of THE SHINING, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, LOST IN TRANSLATION and video after video of heavy-eyed, heroin ingesting porn stars being thundered into next week and uploaded to Pornhub. But what can the dads come up with when they discuss the Top 5 Hotels?I&apos;m upset to have missed this weeks main feature. English Director Ben Wheatley did the incredible KILL LIST back in 2011 which smashed horror and crime thriller together before contributing to the anthology ABC&apos;s OF DEATH (in the segment "U is for Unearthed"). He followed that with A FIELD IN ENGLAND, a psychedelic psychological horror movie set during an unspecified battle in the English Civil War. An intense and often unsettling experience, it will be interesting to hear the Dad&apos;s take on what is an avant-garde horror gem.THE LION GUARD is an animated tv sequel exploring the continuing adventures of characters from THE LION KING, the movie that introduced my eldest child to the concept of death, as so many Disney movies have done for so many children down the years. It follows the journey of Kion, destined for greatness as the Leader of The Pride Lands, but still young enough to be learning the trade alongside a honey badger suffering from food addiction and probably some sort of small farting mammal. A Field in England & The Lion Guard

1999 saw the release of this absolute gem, starring Richard Farnsworth and directed by David Lynch. The Straight Story is the biographical tale of Alvin Straight and his journey to meet and reconcile with his older brother who lives two states across the USA.The difficulty for Alvin.... he can&apos;t drive and has failing health to contend with. So Alvin undertakes this journey on his trusty lawnmower, setting off on a near 400km journey.This is the first of three DAVID LYNCH movies that we&apos;ll be delving into, so be sure to stay tuned for future episodes!Until then, we remain...BAD DADS

BDFR - Midweek Mention... The Straight Story

"Should men cry?" is a question that literally no one asks anymore because we all know that the correct answer is "of course, as long as it&apos;s done in the right way", that is to say that it&apos;s expressed in a manner which continues to conform to society&apos;s expectations and understanding of masculinity and male vulnerability. Shedding tears from extreme physical pain is permitted as is using it as part of a cheap seduction routine, exactly as Sidey’s friend did during a screening of TITANIC which he still feels so bitter about some 20 years later. But will that movie make it into this week’s Top 5 Crying scenes? I wouldn’t have thought so but let’s see what the Dads offer up.  Howie chose this week’s main feature, John Michael McDonagh&apos;s THE GUARD, a buddy cop crime caper with a strong cast. Brendan Gleeson, probably best known for his work as Victor in THE SMURFS 2 received acclaim for his contribution alongside Don Cheadle (SWORDFISH) and Mark Strong who played Dave Summers in 1998&apos;s THE MAN WITH RAIN IN HIS SHOES. Yes, as you can possibly tell by now I haven&apos;t actually seen this movie or indeed heard of it before today which makes writing this part of the show notes tricky. At the risk of trivializing what may be a great movie I&apos;ve never heard of before and am yet to enjoy, all I really want to know is does Don Cheadle do a silly Irish accent?  I often find myself wondering whether centaurs still exist is another way of saying I&apos;ve literally never had that thought before but there&apos;s no doubt some nutballs out there somewhere who can provide charts and diagrams and theories proving the part human, part horse creatures were in fact real and actually still are. Netflix’s CENTAURWORLD also boasts a list of great and varied performers with the likes of Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit and Arrested Development’s Tony Hale working alongside Jamie Cullum, Wendy Malick and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in an animated series exploring the strange world inhabited by these truly disgusting and unnatural abominations. We love to hear from our listeners! The Guard & Centaurworld

We could do with a laugh, so we raided Howie&apos;s DVD collection and got down with BREWSTER&apos;S MILLIONS. Turns out that this was originally a book, and this is only one adaptation of the text amongst thousands of others. The film&apos;s director, Walter Hill said that the reason he made the movie was "to improve his bank account and success quotient". Nice.

BDFR - Midweek Mention... Brewster's Millions

With Reegs cruelly stuck down and isolating once again, the rest of the loons muddled their way through this weeks (mostly) robotic content.First up we mulled over our favourite movie robots. Without Reegs to enforce the rules we went rogue and included just about kind of sentient machinery we could think of. T-800s, Borg, Star Wars droids, you name it, we talked about em.Our main feature this week was the 2012 indie caper, ROBOT AND FRANK. A comment on the perils of growing old, or a charming buddy movie crime spree comedy drama? We thrash it out and decide, so you don&apos;t have to. Peter had a particular problem with one of the performances in the movie. You should certainly tune in to discover who he&apos;s moaning about this week.Occasionally we throw in another movie just to keep us on our toes. This is one of those weeks. Peter really wishes he&apos;d known that the nomination of DISNEY&apos;S ENCANTO was a movie. He was like a naughty school kid doing his homework in the car on the way to school. Robot and Frank & Encanto

Midweek Mention... Executive Decision

If there&apos;s one thing Hollywood loves doing it&apos;s killing us all and given the current state of our world I think we should let them. The first disaster movie, 1936&apos;s SAN FRANCISCO, was about the earthquake which ripped that city apart back in 1908 and that sort of interesting trivia is exactly the kind of thing you won&apos;t get any more of as we discuss our Top 5 Disaster movies. What you will get is incredible special effects, Gerard Butler, ham-fisted environmental messages, Roland Emmerich, dubious science, mile high tsunamis repeatedly crashing into the New York skyline and a Michael Bay movie which divides us all. Adam McKay&apos;s movies have a habit of making an impact on us and the recently released DON&apos;T LOOK UP with its five time Oscar winning cast and cinematography by Linus Sandgren (LA LA LAND, NO TIME TO DIE) was one we had to watch. The plot sees mulleted astrophysicist Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discover a comet on a direct collision course with earth, which is where we live. You and I. Attempting to alert the world to the imminent and very real danger, Dibiasky and her professor, Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) face challenges greater than merely a President reluctant to do anything about the problem before the mid-terms. This one seems to have polarized critics, let&apos;s see what it does to the dads. "What would you do if I sang out of tune?" yes just the opening bars of The Beatle&apos;s classic With A Little Help From My friends as belted out by gravel-throated English rocker Joe Crocker should be enough to conjure up memories of THE WONDER YEARS. We&apos;re talking about the new Disney+ reboot which centres around the Williams family in Alabama in 1968, as we experience pivotal moments in the American black civil rights movement through the eyes of 12 year old Dean (Elisha "EJ" Williams) who fell madly in love with a girl he met on the first day of school and desperately wants to avoid being embarrassed during baseball.  We love to hear from our listeners! We became dads in 2013. The time available to watch films was restricted. So we've started a podcast to try and dedicate some time each week to catching up on films we've missed. As parents we are also subjected to some shows that our kids enjoy. We watch them too... We're starting out and learning as we go. Let us know if you like what you hear.
