About

During the civil rights movement, socialist feminists formed ‘consciousness-raising groups,’ in which people would relate their personal feelings to larger structures and realise that the common problems they faced weren’t their fault. This idea of a raised or ‘higher’ consciousness also has roots in Buddhist and Hindu teachings of the individual self as an illusion.
