TSC Talks guest Nikki Lawley is a former pediatric nurse, former blackjack dealer, and much more, who went from full active life to chronic daily pain and other debilitating symptoms after suffering a traumatic brain injury on the job in 2016. This is the story of how it happened, what happened and how she’s been able to move from existing in survival mode to having a life filled with hope despite ongoing challenges. It was hell, I was always a respected colleague in the medical field. And every doctor I went to was like, we don't understand why your symptoms are so long. We don't understand why you’re not better yet. We don't understand this headache that never goes away. How can you have a headache 24 /7. I'm like, I have a headache. 24/7. I have a headache that never goes away. And they basically told me that it was psychological at one point, and it was so de-humanizing for a person that's never had mental health challenges and extreme situations, to be told, like, this is all in your head. Really nothing wrong with you. And it was like, Whoa, is it really in my head? No, and I mean, chill. When I say I was upbeat and happy, you know, I was different than I was before. I was really quick, really witty really able to, you know, snapback and had a really fun life. I'm a different Nikki and I'm differently-abled, but I feel that patients are the experts, and they are not heard. We are not heard from a patient perspective. When I tell the doctor, this medicine isn't working. Why do I have to be in question?” She goes on to say, “It wasn't like a panacea that like one day I just opened my eyes and oh, cannabis is here. Oh, I'm all better. That's not how it works. Yeah, the universe has allowed me to explore. Honestly, it's allowed me to be able to understand my injury, it's been able to help me help others. I was able to see that cannabis isn't so bad. It's given me hope when I had none. and removing the stigma of this plant is honestly what's in my heart that I really want to help do.” On the state of Cannabis legislation, “But I've learned so much about this plant, and there's so much more to learn. And right. We're just at the beginning, really any of us. Exactly. And New York State is looking at legalization. Yes. I keep seeing that. Is that gonna happen? Well, I was part of it for the last two years and nothing happened. And it was incredibly disappointing. Incredibly. They all got a position so they can make the most money off of it, I think there's so much of that behind it. I don't know all of it. But oh, no, you're 100%. And I really didn't understand that. Like I always just heard people say that, but let me assure you, that's it. I've never seen a more corrupt system literally starting at the very, very top of how it all works together.” “So I had to fight to just see the right providers, I spent so much money out of pocket. Workers' compensation pays for next to nothing. Yeah, unless you have specific doctors that they are willing to pay for, you can't get care, right. Everything was a struggle from medical massage, physical therapy, to cognitive therapy, you name it, they fought you on it. And then to have independent medical exams that are paid for by the insurance company, and they spend literally three and a half minutes with me. And sometimes these choices are sorely inadequate. Sometimes our resources run out before we can get our loved ones into a situation where they can take advantage of supports and services and start to forge their own lives. Sometimes group homes are a good option, and ideally should be a good option for more. But again, we are dependent, or they're dependent on funding and disconnects between providers and often not able to implement and implement enough surrounding support services that would enable individuals to be more successful learn from the group home living situation and move into a less restrictive environment. So, you know, I think my point is that I think they can work. I think there's a lot of challenges. So Brooke, why don't you go ahead and give me a little bit of your background and talk about your experience. Okay, I know this is part two. So if you watch part one, you can hear a lot. I mean, we could reshare that somewhere. So speaking on that I was diagnosed at 18 with TSC. And I had kidney tumors, basically was dealing with a lot of kidney stones, urinary tract infections, that type of thing at the age of like, 17 ish, probably a little bit after my hormones got to use, you know, used to my body, and were like, Hey, we're not gonna let you do life anymore. I was a cheerleader I skater, singer traveling singing group for a Christian. It was called Youth for Christ, stuff like that. I was very, very involved in a lot of things. So for me to be told at 18 I be in the wheelchair by the age of 30 was very detrimental to my mental health. Being told I could never have children. If I did, my body would fight the fetus off. So I just gave up and like, honestly, I was in Darvocet in the basement, and like watch real world and just said My mind was just junk. Because I just like might as well live vicariously through someone else. Since I can't leave my basement. Moving on, I ended up getting pregnant have a daughter with Tuberous sclerosis complex your directory, I was told that basically, you should have an abortion because your body will fight the fetus off anyways. But for me, I chose not to everybody has a different view on that. And that's fine. But that's something I wanted to have to live with. And then having her she was good for about the first four months. And you know, it's just, it's a whole long story when you have to see and I could break down every single little bit of our lives. But I then was pregnant for my son after she started seizing and went to Canada for infantile spasms. I mean, if you I know we've all been through a different differently. We're on a different boat, Jill has different stories with her children that I'll have with my daughter. Although successful, finance did not ignite the fire in her belly like nursing would. 20+ years after high school, marriage, three boys, and a dog named Cooper she took a leap of faith and went back to school to get her nursing degree. Her clinical experience ranges from emergency medicine, skilled nursing in LTAC, geriatric behavioral health & dementia, restorative nursing, and now her primary practice is holistic integrative nursing. “Nursing is my second career but my first love.” Nurse Carey Lee also brings her perspective as a patient to the table. She has battled her own emotional health and has experienced incorrect diagnoses and pharmaceutical trauma. This led her on a journey to find ways of healing other than Western medicine’s first line of treatment-pharmaceuticals. She quickly discovered that getting back to the basics of self-care would become the foundation of healing & maintaining optimal health of mind, body, & spirit. She is passionate about educating patients of various healing modalities and showing them how to THRIVE by implementing a customized self-care plan she lovingly refers to as her Daily Five to Thrive. This self-care plan incorporates the basics: sleep hygiene, nutrition, functional exercise, sunshine, and mindfulness. “Cannabis is one tool we can use to heal & maintain the health of our body, mind, and spirit.” Her own endocannabinoid system was depleted from all of the years of chronic stress that comes with complex post traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). She discovered that medical cannabis was the only way she found relief of the nightmares & terrors experienced most of her life. She also found relief from the chronic pain she battles thanks to Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy. The plant has also allowed Nurse Carey Lee to open up to explore and discover other healing modalities from Eastern medicine, mycology, reiki, energy healing, and holistic psychology." From the transcript: "I've been a registered nurse for three years, a little over three years now. My first career was in mortgage finance completely. You think it would be the opposite? And I did that for about 15 years, everything from like processing, underwriting sales, ended with the bank, owned my own mortgage brokerage firm with my sister and my husband. Wow. Yeah, VIP mortgage group. We ran it out of Elgin, Illinois. And I pretty much ran operations. I handled every aspect of operations and you can be really good at something and hate it. Yeah. And that was me. I it was not fulfilling to me it was it did not tickle my fancy in the slightest. I was miserable. And what made you get into it in the first place? I just kind of fell it fell into it. I actually had left and moved down to Florida after high school in the in the early 90s. And when I came back home to the burbs of Chicago, my sister's still there. She was just got into the mortgage business herself. Hmm. And so I was crashing at her pad. And she was just like, Hey, you want to come in and check it out? And so I did. And, you know, it just it found me It fell in my lap. And I went with it, you know, so I had a great career, I earned a lovely income and met, plus lots of great life experiences. But like I said, it just wasn't it wasn't feeding your soul. It wasn't feeding my soul." In this episode, TSC Talks had the honor and pleasure of speaking with Allison Chapman, Legislative Director~Health Choice 4 Action MA. I met Allison through a Facebook Group called, "FLU YOU BAKER CLASS ACTION", formed to "stay connected, informed & share ideas/information regarding the opposition to the MA DPH Flu Vaccine mandate". We started off hearing about Allison's personal connection to these issues, having 3 children, all of whom suffered significant side effects from vaccines, one of whom is permanently disabled. I'm the Legislative Director for health choice for action, Massachusetts, and it's an all volunteer organization, it's not paid. I think a lot of people misinterpret that. But the reason you do it is to make sure that your children and your family members, that may be a little different than others have provided, continue to be able to access the community, and opportunities as everyone else's creation and jobs and all of these things, we want to make sure that everyone has access to when people are not being denied on the basis of their underlying medical issues, or their religious beliefs, or whatever it is, because we're in Massachusetts, we have all these wonderful laws that don't allow discrimination. And unfortunately, there's still some discrimination. So I help with other moms like myself, and I've been doing it for about 15 years. Wow, I've been injury advocate. So a lot longer than I was doing anything else. But that's what I've done for the last about 15 years. But health choice for actions just for a year, a few other organizations in Massachusetts has been for the last four years. So, you know, I've been doing it a long time, but it's with different organizations. Allison Chapman is not an anti-vaxxer. She is, however, a firm believer in vaccine injury having watched all three of her children and her mother suffer significant effects from vaccinations. Allison is the Legislative Director for Health Choice for Action, Massachusetts and has been active with other organizations concerned with vaccine injury. It was wonderful to cross paths with Sarah Hope on LinkedIn recently and have her as a guest on the podcast. She is the first Microdose Coach I have met, let alone interviewed. I have a personal interest in microdosing, mostly cannabis, but recently have tried psilocybin with excellent results. It has been a tool to engage in some perceptual shifts, processing and healing that I found subtle, non-toxic and worthwhile. "With microdosing, basically, what you're going for is a sub perceptual effect, so that you have a slight increase in brain connectivity, but you're not having so much so much electricity or connectivity in the brain that you're tripping or having a plant journey. It was our pleasure to speak with Katherine Caulfield on TSC Talks. Katy is an author, energy healer, astrologer and mystic "focused on self-love, self-healing and holistic wellness through uniting the spiritual and physical realms". Jill crossed paths with her when given the gift of a channeled healing through past podcast guest, Dorina Leslie. Not familiar with this modality of healing, I had no idea what to expect, was concerned I was going to "screw it up" and was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. I received some poignant insight and feedback which helped significantly and thought it would be great to have Katy on to share her own story of how she got into this line of work, as well as how she was led to channel 9 books, her kundalini awakening and thoughts on our current state of affairs with covid. From her website, "Inspired by her own eye-opening spiritual and Kundalini awakening in 2013, Katherine began to follow her heart, her curiosity, her passions and to remember why she had incarnated on Earth. This led to lots of writing, energy work, astrology, travel, communing with nature, learning about consciousness and so much more! A few years later, in the summer of 2015, she received first contact from The Spirit Collective, a team of non-physical guides who informed her they had nine books for her to channel. She is now honored and grateful to deliver these important messages of love and wisdom to all of humanity." Katy started out by sharing how she was led to this work through her grandmother, "I would say, it almost goes back to my grandmother. So I was named after her, Catherine Katie. And she was a psychic. And so she did these readings. So I grew up with this. I grew up thinking it was normal, you know." She went on to explain coming to the realization that she had psychic abilities, "I think had always been on some level aware from a young age. Like I had an imaginary friend that I spoke to, which is probably more of like an angel. But, I didn't really step into it until into my 20s. And it was after she passed that, and you know, who knows how that all works, but, she's definitely supporting me on the other side as well." Pretty cool stuff. It was very intense, very intense, it totally rocked my world. There was no control, there's no way that I could have changed it or, directed it, it was coming from a higher place. But when it first happened, and really throughout, and since then, I would say the only way I could describe it was like a full embodiment, receiving of grace, like divine grace like that."
