Bob Bowlsby has been the Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference since 2012. A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Bowlsby wrestled at Minnesota State Moorhead as a college athlete before getting into the world of college athletics administration. After leaving Moorhead, he took a job in athletics at Northern Iowa before ascending to the role of Athletics Director. He left UNI to take the same job at the University of Iowa. At Iowa, Bowlsby led the Hawkeyes athletic programs for 16 seasons, overseeing the merger of the men’s and women’s departments into one cohesive system.  In 2006, Bowlsby headed to Stanford, where he was the Athletics Director for until he left for the Big 12 in 2012.  Bowlsby will discuss his career and what it takes to lead a team, work with differing factions that pull decisions in every direction, trusting your team before diving into the landscape of college sports and the health of Division I wrestling. Little Rock hosted its first home event of the year on January 17 at the Jack Stephens Center against Oklahoma State and SIUE. The tri-meet launched the second season of Little Rock wrestling on the mats. Coach Neil Erisman, an Oklahoma State alum, sat down to talk about the progress of the program in the second year of competition, what it’s like to bring in new wrestlers with something tangible to show rather than just a vision, and the investment a coach feels when they lose an athlete who doesn’t want to compete anymore.  Erisman also explains some of the things that aren’t taught, but learned on the job, such as working with mentors from the community, giving back with community outreach as well as his relationships with assistant coaches Javier Maldonado and Chandler Rogers.  All that news and more … Daily Wrestling News, delivered every day, free. Making a difference in Little Rock is more than just wrestling

Coach Tony Ersland joins hosts Tanner Lipsett and Cory Palm to break down the squad's season-opening win over Northwestern, the promising performance of four true freshmen seeing their first collegiate action and the steady hand of veterans Devin Schroder and Thomas Penola. The guys also preview this weekend's road swing to Illinois and Wisconsin and spend some time honoring the late Don Corrigan, the former Purdue coach and long-time mentor to the program, who passed this week. The 2021 season if officially in full swing, and the Always Aggressive Podcast continues to take you behind the scenes of the Purdue wrestling team with head coach Tony Ersland, Cory Palm and Tanner Lipsett. On this week’s show the Boilermakers say goodbye to a member of the Purdue wrestling family, look back at Friday’s season-opening win over Northwestern and take a quick glance at the weekend ahead at Illinois and Wisconsin.   The Boilermakers got sad news yesterday with the passing of former head coach Dr. Don Corrigan. Corrigan was the head coach at Purdue from 1969 to 1975, and was a Boilermaker assistant from 1965-69. After coaching he went on to officiate in the Big Ten and NCAA over the next 10 years and continued working at Purdue in the kinesiology department, where he served as the department head until 2002. Corrigan was a fixture in Purdue athletics and the Boilermaker wrestling room until the recent events began preventing his visit. He will be forever remembered and treasured by the Purdue family.    The Boilermakers’ 28-8 victory over Northwestern on Friday was a great start to 2021, and Ersland takes a closer look at several specific weight classes within the dual. He digs in on freshman Macartney Parkinson’s upset win at 184 pounds, a couple Boilermakers who wrestled up a weight, and the dominant tech-fall wins by senior Devin Schroder and sophomore Thomas Penola.    Purdue continues its Big Ten dual season this weekend, heading on a Midwest swing to Illinois and Wisconsin. Freshman Ed Scott makes his podcast debut – NCS74

It's match week on the Always Aggressive Podcast as head coach Tony Ersland, Cory Palm and Tanner Lipsett dive into the start of the 2021 season. The Boilermakers open their schedule Friday at 7 p.m. ET, hosting Northwestern at Holloway Gymnasium live on the Big Ten Network.    While the Boilermakers have to wait until Friday to start, several other Big Ten schools opened their seasons last weekend. The crew all watched some wrestling last weekend for the first time in months, and all had some takeaways. One of the most notable things was the abundance of new faces around the conference and true freshmen competing.    Expect to see some new faces in the Purdue lineup this weekend against the Wildcats. Ersland said that most notably we would see senior Devin Schroder, sophomore Kendall Coleman and freshman Emil Soehnlen on the mat.    The crew wrapped up the show looking at Monday night’s College Football Playoff Championship game between Alabama and Ohio State. Nebraska head coach Mark Manning – OTM625

There’s been a long time between the time I spoke with Cody Goodwin of The Des Moines Register for International Podcast Day. We’d just finished up with the Night of Conflict out in Sioux City, Iowa and were conversing about the state of wrestling coverage. Part of that wrestling coverage discussion is here on Episode 644 of Short Time where the 2019 NWMA National Wrestling Journalist of the Year talks about his foray into podcasting with In The Room, how he talked his bosses at the paper into starting one and how he’s used the medium to cover angles that don’t often get the space in the paper.  You can listen to In The Room wherever podcasts are found (or by clicking here). SHORT TIME SHOTS I went almost two and a half hours on Saturday night as what was supposed to be Burroughs-Taylor turned into Adeline-Tamyra. To be balanced, it would be Gray-Mensah-Stock, but that’s too many hyphens to write out cleanly. What did I go two and a half hours with? Watchin’ Wrestling. This was the idea when I built the Speakeasy and I want to thank Bryan Hazard, Tony Rotundo, Zach Bogle, J.P. Pearson, Dysen Gould, Earl Smith, Jeremy Lanthorn and Austin Early for joining in the discussion. We sat around, had some beverages (not Dysen) and watched the wrestling and talked about it. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do with this studio.  Burroughs and Taylor will face off on January 13 on Flowrestling as Taylor had some contact tracing that forced him to delay. Speaking of Burroughs, he was on The Joe Rogan Experience, which is a Spotify exclusive, for a while. I’m still trying to finish it because it was a long episode, but so far, we as a sport are better because we have such great ambassadors like Jordan Burroughs.  The NWCA released the new Top 25 today and Illinois and Michigan State entered the Top 25, giving the Big Ten 12 teams ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in history. Michigan State started out the year ranked at No. 21, but dropped out after a week. The Spartans popped back in and prior to the preseason ranking two weeks ago, the last time a wrestling team based in East Lansing was ranked on the college mats was 2009. Northern Colorado moved up to No. 23. Bear down. Also, checked the mail today and got some socks and a t-shirt from Dr. Joe Parisi, an administrator at Central Methodist University and former head wrestling coach at Lindenwood. Also in the mail was the sweatshirt I got from contributing to San Francisco State University. Hat tip to Jason Welch. Des Moines Register wrestling writer Cody Goodwin on the changing face of sports media

The first Always Aggressive Podcast of 2021 comes with a wonderful holiday present as the Big Ten released the 2021 schedule on New Year's Eve and unveiled the nine dates for head coach Tony Ersland and the Boilermakers. Ersland and co-hosts Cory Palm and Tanner Lipsett walk through the schedule, talk challenges of the pending season and take a look at some of the team's preseason rankings. With the Boilermakers set to start competing in just over a week, Ersland dives into the team's five duals and two tri-duals for the regular season, specifically commenting on how the structure of the slate worked out. When asked if he has ever had a season this tough to prepare for, Ersland had a very simple answer: "No." They look at some of the challenges coming at them this season and how every member of the Purdue roster will need to be ready to go this year. Purdue has seven individuals with preseason rankings this season, headlined by senior Devin Schroder and sophomore Kendall Coleman. Talking Big Ten schedules – AAS2E11

Afsoon Johnston, then known as Afsoon "Sue" Roshanzamir, was the first world medalist in women's wrestling back in 1989. Afsoon will talk about the book, Afsoon, written by Craig Sesker, that tells the story of how she and her family fled Iran in the early 1980s and landed in California. Her journey made her somewhat of an outcast in an era where tensions between the U.S. and Iran were high. She gravitated towards wrestling, a sport where girls were rare. Afsoon's breaks down the story of how the book came to be and discusses some of the turmoil she experienced growing up as a teen and as a wrestler. You can get the book at AfsoonWrestling.com SHORT TIME SHOTS Well, we’ve got Division I teams taking the mats all over the place and before I get corrected by my own correction, college wrestling has been ongoing since early November and that does include Division I. On November 14, The Citadel wrestled a home dual. The NAIA has been less prolific than normal, but they’ve had dual meets consistently. Now we have schedules for most of the 71 teams competing this year on the Division I mats. There’s a handful of Division II schools that aren’t competing - the schools in the PSAC, most notably. Division III has seen a number of conferences opt out, but the only all-sports conference where every school sponsors wrestling in Division III is the American Rivers Conference, formerly known as the Iowa Conference. We’ll see some Division III fire up this weekend. Speaking of Division III, Case Western Reserve head coach Danny Song stepped down from his post yesterday. Case is one of those schools that opted out of sports this winter. Before we get to the weekend’s action, we had a couple of matches in Division II on Tuesday. Coker topped Emmanuel 31-18 down in Franklin Springs, Georgia, while fifth-ranked McKendree shut out Kentucky Wesleyan 51-0 on the strength of five falls. Tyler Delaware picked up a 9-5 win at 133, he’s a transfer from some poorly ran Division I school in Norfolk, Virginia. The NWCA Division I Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday and for the first time since the Nixon administration, Northern Colorado is nationally ranked. The last time the Bears were ranked by the NWCA was when they were sixth heading into the postseason on March 5, 1969. The school wasn’t even known as Northern Colorado yet, it was still Colorado State College. The University of Northern Colorado’s name came to be in 1970. With five returning NCAA qualifiers the Bears topped Wyoming 24-19 over the weekend and with both teams receiving votes last week, that was all Troy Nickerson’s squad needed to jump in at No. 25. But wait, Northern Colorado wasn’t Division I until like 2008 or something right? True, but prior to the three divisional format, the NCAA championship was open and there were college and university divisions. Prior to 1963, there was only one NCAA championship. Schools like Northwestern would routinely dual teams like Wheaton and Elmhurst. The artist formerly known as Colorado State College lived atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. There’s a lot of history and wrestling tradition in Greeley and its nice to see what coach Nickerson has done to keep the kids home and put a ranked team on the mat for the first time in nearly 19,000 days. The wrestling world lost Danny Hodge on Christmas Eve. The only wrestler to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated for his wrestling credentials, Hodge was a standout in three varieties of the sporting world - collegiate and international wrestling, boxing and professional wrestling. As Hodge became one of the favorites in the world of professional wrestling, he worked and trained with hundreds of would-be superstars, including Robert Remus, an Eden Prairie, Minnesota native who would later become one of the most iconic superstars in the business, Sgt. Slaughter. After Hodge’s passing, Sarge wrote a letter to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame recalling his memories of Danny Hodge. Get to know The Grind at Appalachian State #InternationalPodcastDay

On October 16, California State University, Fresno announced it was dropping men’s tennis, women’s lacrosse, and for the second time in school history, men’s wrestling. After a decade-long quest to bring the sport back to campus in 2016, a new quest has been started by Keep Fresno State Wrestling. In conjunction with USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and Flowrestling, the Keep Fresno State Wrestling group will kickoff its official efforts on Monday, December 21 at 6 p.m. Pacific with a panel of wrestling coaches, athletes, and alumni. That discussion will be streamed live on Flowrestling.org and also available via Zoom.  The panel will highlight and celebrate the strong history of Fresno State wrestling, not just with its on the mat successes, but the post-collegiate success and leadership of its alumni in the Central Valley and the state of California. Among those participating with local Fresno ties are former head coach Dennis DeLiddo, current Beat the Streets Los Angeles Executive Director Yero Washington, and wrestling World medalist, Olympian and UFC champion Daniel Cormier, who is the high school wrestling coach at Gilroy High School, two hours west of Fresno. Current Fresno State athletes are also expected to participate.  Also included in the discussion will be World and Olympic champions John Smith, the current head coach at Oklahoma State and Jordan Burroughs. The panel will be moderated by Hall of Fame wrestling broadcaster Jason Bryant.  “We feel this is a valuable opportunity for the wrestling community to be able to share in the development of what the alumni is doing to try to keep the program at Fresno State,” said Mike Moyer, Executive Director of the NWCA. “The Keep Fresno State Wrestling efforts are just ramping up and it’ll be important for the public to understand the goals and mission, fundraising and pledges to make sure we don’t lose another valuable institution in a state that has the highest participation of wrestlers in the country at the high school level.” The Keep Fresno State Wrestling effort wants to highlight the importance of wrestling in the Central Valley, the state of California and the entire sport as a whole. Wrestling is insanely popular in the Fresno area and the opportunity to tap into a successful pool of potential Fresno State students is high. The opportunities offered for wrestling from public institutions at the collegiate level greatly underserve the demand on sheer participation numbers alone.  “There is a lot at stake here with Fresno State announcing that for the second time, their program would be eliminated,” said Brendan Buckley, a Fresno State alum and the current Executive Director of Beat The Streets New York, a non-profit organization whose aim is to make a Lifelong Impact on New York City student-athletes through the benefits and skills acquired by participating in amateur wrestling.  “There is a strong legacy at play and one that has been the crown jewel for Fresno State Athletics. How many programs on Fresno State’s campus can claim 37 individual NCAA All-American honors, 15 Top 25 team finishes or a three-time NCAA champion and Olympic silver medalist?” said Buckley, speaking to the success of the program.  Of the 23 individuals who earned 37 All-American honors on the mats, 18 of them are Californians.  Keep Fresno State Wrestling wants to celebrate the success that wrestling has brought to those students who would have never come to the school if not for wrestling and the impact that legacy has had on thousands of students, athletes or otherwise, who came to Fresno State because they had a teacher, coach or mentor who gained those valuable life skills through wrestling and through it being offered at Fresno State.  Fresno State’s website lists one of its Pride Points with athletics as: “Our student-athletes are expected to do well in school and act as role-models on and off the field, and the University strives to support them in creati...
